Here are some ideas for backpacking food, the best way to find what works for you is to experiment. You may find that what you love to eat at home is the last thing you want to eat in the wilderness. Get creative and experiment with things. Browse your grocery aisles and look for items that are powders or dehydrated. Look for sauce mixes, seasoning packets. Just because the directions for something say you have to do several steps, doesn't mean it won't work and taste good just adding water or doing a few less steps. You can also add cold water to a lot of foods and eat them without cooking at all (of course you want to make sure you adhere to food safety).

I will do my best to keep from having broken links, if you find one please let me know.

No-Cook Food Ideas (More coming soon, including recipes, check back!)

Peanut Butter & Raisin Rollup – One of my favorites and easy. Spread one package of Justin's Honey Peanut Butter (or whatever nut butter you like) onto a flour tortilla. Sprinkle raisins all over the top, roll up and enjoy.

Tuna Salad Rollup – Mix a foil packet of tuna with a couple packets of mayo and one packet of pickle relish, spread onto a flour tortilla, roll up and enjoy. You can also enjoy on crackers. You can also rehydrate some dried veggies like celery, onions, peas, etc. Remember that it takes a bit longer to rehydrate veggies in cool water. If you put the veggies in water in a leak-proof container and carry them in your pack between meals they should be ready to use when you stop to eat.

Chicken/Turkey Salad Rollup – Rehydrate some freezedried chicken or turkey (this takea a tiny bit longer in cool water than it does when adding hot water so plan your time). I like using freezedried better than the foil packets because there are less "chemicals" used for preservatives. Mix a couple packets of mayo and one packet of pickle relish, spread onto a flour tortilla, roll up and enjoy.

Other Things to Roll in a Tortilla – Hummus (carry pre-made or mix up powdered with cool water); Black/Pinto Beans (can be purchased dried, add cool water and let rehydrate) add some Smooth or Chunky Backcountry Salsa (see recipes above) for an extra tasty treat.

Granola with Milk – At home put a serving portion of granola in a sturdy zip bag (like a Ziplock® freezer bag) and then add Nido powdered milk. When you are ready to eat just add some water shake it up and enjoy right out of the bag. Delicious!

Food Supply resources (listed in no particular order):

Harmony House Foods – A variety of dried ingredients for making your own dried meals without having the work of drying yourself. They also sell kits of food that make several meals.

Emergency Essentials – They have individual dried ingredients in large quantities and small. They also have already prepackaged meals and MREs.

Packit Gourmet – They have individual dried ingredients as well as pre-made food! Their meals are VERY TASTY and easy to prepare with little clean-up needed. They also have several gear items related to eating (e.g. pot cozies).

Mountain House – Prepackaged, just pour in the hot water and they are ready. Most of the Mountain House meals have a great taste and don't repeat later on if you know what I mean ;).

Cook-in-Bags™ – If you prepare your own dried foods it's nice to just use a bag and pour in the hot water without cleaning a pot. These bags are approved for hot water use.

Opsak – Minimizes odors of food stored within. I knew a guy who was experimenting with this in his barn. He put cheese inside to see if the rodents would find it. They did not!

Minimus.Biz – Mini sized condiments, oils and seasoning.

Karen's Naturals – Great source of freeze dried fruit, veggies and powders. Even organic!

True Lemon – Citrus flavoring for cooking and for water.

Penzeys – EXCELLENT spices.

Fantastic Foods – Great vegetarian products that you can just add water to and many are great hot or cold. These can be found in some stores too.

Intek Evolution – An awesome protein powder that mixes well with just water and a bottle. You don't need one of those fancy cups with the funny mixing ball. Add some fruit powders and you've got a quick breakfast to break camp with or a tasty way to give your tired muscles some needed protein.

Nature Box – Great snacks. It is a subscription service but you can get one time shipments too.

Thrive Market – Selection of organic and non-GMO foods.
